The Reward of Virtue

A long time ago, there lived an honest but poor painter named Adeel. He used to paint houses to earn a livelihood. However, after a lot of struggle, he could only have two meals daily. One day, the village’s landlord called the painter and said, “Listen! I have called you for a very important job. Do you want to do it?” Adeel, who was already searching for a great opportunity, said, “Sure, sir, I will do it.” After accepting the offer, the landlord allotted him the task of painting the boat only in one day. Adeel got glad to get work. \”What would you charge for this job?” asked the landlord. “I generally charge 1500 Rs. for this job,” said Adeel. The landlord agreed and took him near the river to see his boat. After seeing his boat, Adeel requested some time from the landlord to fetch his equipment. Shortly, he returned with his equipment and started painting the boat. While painting the boat, he noticed that the boat had a big hole in it. “If I painted the boat without fixing the hole, it will sink. So, I should block the hole first”, he thought. After completing his task, he updated the landlord, who was surprised when he saw his repaired boat. The landlord exclaimed, “Wow! You have done a commendable job. You can collect your money tomorrow.”

In the evening, the landlord’s family went for a picnic and sightseeing on the same boat. After some time, the landlord’s servant named Zayed, who had returned home from holidays, inquired about everyone as he did not spot anyone in the home. He got worried after hearing about the trip from the landlord and said, “Sir, the boat had a large hole in it.”. After listening to Zayed’s concern, the landlord freaked out and called his family back. The landlord\’s family returned home from a day-long tour within a few minutes. Seeing his family totally alright, the landlord felt relieved. The next day, the landlord called Adeel and gave him double money, in addition to his pay, as a reward. After counting the money, Adeel said, “Sir, you have given me an extra amount by mistake.” But the landlord praised him and said, “You have done an excellent job. Besides that, you also blocked the hole in the boat, which I was unaware of. Something bad would have happened to my family if you had not blocked itly. So, the reward is not only for your hard work but also for your virtue.” Adeel got delighted by the landlord\’s kindness. He paid thanks to the landlord and happily went back to his home.
