In a quiet suburb on the outskirts of a busy city, there lived a couple named Marco and Sherry. They were ordinary people—Marco worked long hours as a delivery driver, while Sherry managed a small online store selling handmade crafts. Though they lived modestly, they were content, finding joy in their cozy home and the quiet moments they shared. But, like many others, they dreamed of something more—a life of ease, free from the relentless grind of bills and obligations.
One evening, as Marco was scrolling through his phone after a gruelling shift, an ad popped up. “INVEST IN THE FUTURE,” it proclaimed, accompanied by images of sleek offices, luxury cars, and happy families lounging by pools. Curious, Marco clicked. It was a pitch for a tech startup and an advertisement for a new app that claimed it could revolutionize the way people earned money by matching gig workers to high-paying clients across the globe. Moreover, to Marco’s surprise, the app’s founders were at the time, looking for investors, with a promise of high rewards for early backers.
“This could be it,” Marco told Sherry over dinner. “Sherry, if we invest now, I bet we will never ever have to worry about money again.”
Sherry, ever cautious, furrowed her brow. “It sounds risky. What do we know about startups or apps?”
“Nothing,” Marco admitted. “But think about it—what if this is our chance? We could pay off the house, take a vacation, maybe even start that bakery you’ve always dreamed about.”
Sherry hesitated as she didn’t buy the whole idea and also didn’t share Marco’s blind optimism. Nevertheless, the allure of the endless possibilities was one she couldn’t deny as well. So, after days of debate, the couple decided they would take a leap of faith, hence using almost all their savings to buy shares in the company.
At first, it seemed like they had struck gold: the startup’s app quickly gained momentum. Users and media had it as their centre of attention. And every week, Marco and Sherry received glowing updates about the company’s growth. It all happened so quickly that their initial investment tripled in value within a span of months, and Marco started dreaming even bigger.
“Sherry, I’m thinking of investing more now. You see, if we put more in now, we could earn so much that we might even be able to get early retirement. How cool would that be!” Marco said one evening.
“Um, okay, but have you thought about the risks?” Sherry was concerned. “You do know we have already made more than our expectations, right? I think it’s high time we started making careful choices. Don’t you think?”
“Careful doesn’t make you rich,” Marco replied, brushing aside her concerns.
Against Sherry’s better judgment, they liquidated everything they could, including their emergency fund, Sherry’s craft supplies budget, and even the money they had set aside for a new car. Then, they reinvested it into the company. With Sherry having doubts about it, Marco assured her it was a smart and carefully calculated move. He even showed her graphs and projections that promised a life full of ease.
The deal, although, was not a good one.
Still, the gamble paid off for a while. With a major deal being finalized in the company, the two saw their investment soar. The difference in their lifestyle was also noticed by friends and family, for they had started shopping in luxury malls, dining at upscale restaurants, and even wearing nothing less than designer wear. They were looking forward to a bright future, one with no end to money.
But beneath the surface, cracks were forming. The company that seemed so grand outwardly was facing serious struggles internally: the management was irresponsible, and the promises were quite unrealistic. They even got an accusation of intellectual property theft. Marco, intoxicated by the prospect of endless wealth, ignored the warning signs. He dismissed Sherry’s growing unease, for he thought it must be a temporary setback.
But one Friday evening, just as they were about to leave for a luxurious weekend trip, Marco got a notification – URGENT: Investor Update.
The company was shutting down.
The news hit like a thunderclap: Overnight, all that Marco and Sherry had invested was wiped out, and the shares, once worth thousands of dollars, became worthless. Marco couldn’t believe his eyes, “This cannot be happening. I.. I had planned all this to support us for life!”
Sherry was equally devastated, yet she hid anger beneath her grief. She couldn’t help but say, “I told you… I always told you to be careful. Why could we not just be happy and content with what we had? What was the point in asking for more?”
“I was just trying to make a better life for us,” Marco shot back with frustration. “And after all, how was I supposed to know this would happen?”
The debate heated up so much that their relationship was threatened. The coming days just made the realization of the losses sink in. With all their savings gone, they not only had to cancel their trips but also crushed the dream of financial freedom.
However, they kept their spirits alive and never gave up. Marco took extra shifts while Sherry worked in online stores. She also took her creativity and used it to expand their online business. In other words, the couple tried everything under the sun to stabilize themselves. And slowly, they began to recover, both financially and emotionally. It had been a horrible incident indeed and had undoubtedly scarred them, but it had also done one good thing: it had helped them step back and reevaluate their priorities in life.
One evening, as they sat on their old couch in the living room, Sherry politely spoke, “You know, Marco, I have been thinking lately about what happened. Now that I see it clearly, it wasn’t just the company that failed; we did.”
And Marco nodded, “Yeah, we let greed blind us and forgot the things that really matter.”
“Exactly,” Sherry said. “It’s not that dreaming big is wrong, but when one fails to balance it cautiously with reality, that’s where the problem begins. And unfortunately, that is precisely what we did… we risked everything we had, or even did not have, for something that was a mere dream.
